CAPA NEGRA.

CAPA

New composers of film scores are always a welcome sight, well for me anyway. I am not sure if Joan Vila is what we would refer to as a new comer as he has a number of film and TV score credits to his name, the excellent PEQUINA SILENCIOSA, LA AMANT DEL SILENCI and BLUE RAI amongst them,(all available digitally on Spotify) but as we all know there is always one score that eventually attracts collectors to a composer and it is not necessarily their first or even their best, it is just a score that stands out at a particular time. The music for CAPA NEGRA or THE BLACK CAPE is one such soundtrack and it is one that I recently listened to and was much impressed by the composer’s style and composing skills. It is a surprisingly melodic and mature sounding work, with some interesting orchestration and numerous themes and action cues. There are for example some beautifully crafted solo piano passages with these then returning with underlying strings that add a greater poignancy and emotive quality to each piece. The film focuses upon the life and adventures of a bandit, THE BLACK CLOAK, who was active from 1816 to 1836, the film is filled with action and contains numerous romantic moments. All of which are supported and underlined by the highly thematic score by composer Vila. I am glad to say that this is a symphonic led score which does contain various synthetic enhancements, but the symphonic and the electronic elements not only blend well together but are successful in creating an atmospheric and hauntingly effective soundtrack. The composer achieving this by managing to balance them correctly. I have but one complaint about the score and that is it is far too short, the running time being under half an hour. Piano plays a large part in the foundation of the soundtrack the instrument being utilised in most of the cues on the release, with a subtle five note motif being present that attracts and delights because of its simplicity and its fragile musical persona. Many of the opening cues are short lived (the first four being under one minute) but this does not however, detract from their obvious quality and stature, it is just that when we begin to listen the cue is soon finished and leaves the listener craving more of the same or at least a further development of what has been started. The score is performed in the main by the piano as I have already stated, plus this is punctuated and augmented by strings, harp and a subdued use of woods. The composer also bringing percussion into the equation later in the score to bolster strings as they become more action led and driving in their direction, I am not too certain if all the strings are of the symphonic variety, but nevertheless they remain affecting as well as effective especially within the cue TEMA D’ AMOR which boasts a wonderfully emotive and gracious sounding thematic core.

The composer also employs chorale performances that are supported by the strings within the cue EL CASAMENT which initially is a percussive led piece purveying an atmosphere that is dark and threatening, but this mood soon alters, and the strings introduce the voices but again the cue returns to how it started with percussion becoming dominant. The movie looks as if it is a swashbuckler, filled with energy and action, but all the time the music reflects that maybe this is not just another action story but one that has heart and emotion. Although short in its duration, CAPA NEGRA is certainly a score that entertains and one that is filled with fragility, melodies and an abundance of delicate refrains. Check it out, or should I say check him out, you will not be disappointed.
