The series The English begins on BBC2 on Thursday 10th November at nine o clock and will be available on prime video for the rest of the world on November 11th. The musical score is by accomplished and sought-after composer Federico Jusid. On 25th November Silva Screen Records will digitally release Jusid’s sweeping, nostalgic and raw score to Hugo Blick’s six-part contemporary Western.

The composer giving a nod to 1950s and 1960s Hollywood western scores but also integrating elements of sounds that are more up-tempo and could be associated with Italian or Euro western styles which the composer successfully weaves into the fabric of the score at times evoking the melodic and commanding style of Ennio Morricone via harmonica, whistling, guitar, and choir. The score is further bolstered and augmented by Dvořák’s String Quartet No. 12 which is known as the “American”, because it was written during the composers stay in America, which was just three years after the events that are depicted within the series. The soundtrack release also features beautiful folk songs by artists such as The Wailin’ Jennys, Melanie, Crooked Still, Ora Cogan and Tom McRae. The second cue on the recording, Tâtačiksta – I Cherish You, features a tender reading by Emily Blunt that is delicately underscored by Jusid with guitar and piano that is underlined by subtle use of strings adding emotional punctuation and poignancy to the proceedings.

Jusid’s musical structure is based on leitmotifs, that are very simple and symmetric, constantly varied and developed to mirror the protagonists’ journeys. Big orchestral sounds underpin epic and romantic interludes that are further enhanced via sound design processed percussion and ethnic instrumentation that seamlessly blend in with the symphonic material. Creating a score that is effective within the series and entertaining and enthralling away from the images standing as interesting and entertaining music on its own. This is a highly dramatic score that is filled to the brim with soaring and affecting themes that are complimented by delicate and fragile sounding phrases and tone poems, its majestic and sweeping work proving that the epic sound of the western is still alive and well. Written and directed by Hugo Blick (The Honorable Woman, Black Earth Rising) The English stars Emily Blunt, Chaske Spencer, Stephen Rea, Valerie Pachner, Rafe Spall, Tom Hughes, Toby Jones and Ciarán Hinds.

It tells the story of an English noblewomen and a Pawnee ex-cavalry scout who come together in 1890 middle America to cross a violent landscape built on dreams and blood. It is both brutal and beautiful, crafted superbly and choreographed exquisitely, with nods to the filmmaking style of Sergio Leone and John Ford, filled with dark humour and lingering wide-angle shots. And is a sincere homage to the films as made by Hollywood which depicted the stories of the old west. Jusid’s score supports and ingratiates throughout adding weight to already powerful scenarios and creating brooding and atmospheric moments. Federico Jusid has received dozens of international music awards for his music on more than sixty features and thirty TV series worldwide. Highly recommended.
