CINDERELLA’S CURSE.

Are you sitting comfortably…… Yes,,,, good then I will begin. Once Upon a time, a girl named Cinderella lived with her stepmother and two stepsisters. It was Cinderella who had to wake up each morning when it was still dark and cold to start the fire. Cinderella who cooked the meals. Cinderella who kept the fire going. The poor girl could not stay clean, from all the ashes and cinders by the fire.

But then she decided enough was enough……yes there’s a new take on this classic fairy tale at the cinema, Cinderella’s Curse, is a bloody and horrific affair based on the classic fairy tale. I suppose you could call it the Macabre, the Mad and the Blood soaked, because that is exactly what the film is.

Distributed by the same people who distributed Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey, the movie is directed by Louisa Warren who is also the films producer, this is a spine tingling and shock filled horror/fantasy, that I know will delight horror fans and sicken fairy tale purists, who I think will end up having a nervous breakdown.

The movie is based upon the same story that Disney popularised back in the 1950’s but let’s just say this is not a syrupy or nice film, they take the original story an turn it on its head and inside out to create a heart stopping and malevolent tale filled with blood spattered scenes and macabre events. All of which are aided greatly by a wonderfully dark , irreverent, and affecting soundtrack composed by James Cox, it’s a shadowy at times atonal work, yet has interludes which are romantic, melancholy, and mesmerising.

The composer combining the dark with the light admirably to create a score that is stunning and has nods to Bernard Herrmann. This is an accomplished score, overflowing with succulent compositions that tantalise and entertain. Available now on digital platforms… Well worth taking a listen.  And did they all end up living happily ever after? Not quite…….
